Pensacola Police Department looking to add more K9s to force

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- At the Pensacola Police Department it's not just men and women in uniform. They currently have six K-9's on the streets. The department is looking to add two new dogs to the team after one of their K-9's passed away from kidney failure this year.

Two new dogs can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $12,000 each. It's paid from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund. "Which is money confiscated through drug transaction, seizures of cars, so dogs play a huge part in that, too, putting money in that fund, so essentially paying for themselves," said Randy Rickred.

Picking a new dog is no easy task. All the police K-9's are bred in Europe.

"Europeans have it down to a science. They are a working dog. They've been bred for centuries to do their work. They have to have the drive to and the courage necessary to do the work that we do," Rickred said.

PPD has one of the best K-9 programs in the state and says the dogs are a big benefit to the community.

"We do demonstrations for the kids showing them how the dogs can find drugs. We take a lot of drugs off the streets, millions of dollars worth of drugs in the past 18 years since we've had the program, and we also locate a lot of felons. We track felons. These dogs can track through back yards, wooded areas, they can help find missing children."

Once the department gets the new canines they'll have to go through a ten week class before they hit the streets.
