Per trip proper — Cancun, Mexico
I don't have that much to report from the past couple of days but here goes, I will give it a try. Sara and Hector got back from the christening earlier than expected so we went out for lunch in Cancun. It's quite a strange place really. There is the aptly named "Zona Hotelera" or Hotel Zone which is clearly where all the hotels are. They are mainly all inclusive style resorts with their own private stretches of beach. Then there is "Downtown" which is the more bustling and Mexican part of town. Then there seems to be everything in between which consists of shopping malls and big warehouse style shops. Until you are on the beach, it's not the prettiest place in the world! After lunch we came back to the house and chilled out and then went for a walk before having an early night. It gets dark quite early at this time of year, so by 5pm its dark, which is odd when it's 30degrees outside. Monday, Sara dropped me off at a public beach called Playa la Perla, while she went to class. The beach was lovely, deserted, white sand, crystal clear water, with some amazing houses along the beachfront. I walked for ages just being nosey and looking in the houses. I was only there for a couple of hours as Hector then came to pick me up and take me home for lunch. In the afternoon we went for a wander round Plaza Las Americas which is an enormous mall. We went to Hooters for dinner...yes Hooters! Not really what I had imagined, but it was only 7pm and I'm sure it would have got wilder later on. The nachos were amazing though - it's Sara's favourite place for nachos, which is why we went in the first place. I'm still pretty jet lagged so was happy to come home and watch a movie before going to bed early again. Today I had a couple of hours in town just buying bits and pieces and getting my nails done for what I think will be the last time in a long time. Then Hector took the afternoon off so that we could go to Puerto Morelos just down the coast towards Playa del Carmen. This is a small coastal town and much more like what I expect I will be seeing more of along the way. We went for a long walk along the beach, again there were plenty of amazing beach houses to nose at. Apparently it's a popular destination for Canadians...although its clearly popular with naturists as well, as I saw when we walked past a hotel called Desire...lots of naked people. According to Hector there is a more risqué version of the same hotel a bit further up the coast - it's a swingers hotel. I didn't even know they existed! Such a sheltered life I've led! Anyway, we headed back home and picked up shrimp tacos on the way back...not my favourite dish so far! And here I am now...writing more than I expected to be able to! Tomorrow I'm going to yoga with Sara in the morning and then heading to the hotel to meet up with the group I'm going to be travelling with over the next 10 days. Should be interesting! I'm looking forward to getting going though. So far, although I've had a nice time with Hector and Sara, it doesn't feel like my trip has started properly yet. So tomorrow is the beginning of the trip proper in my mind. Wish me luck!
