Arrival in Cancun — Cancun, Mexico

Cancun, Mexico

So, first day of my new life...what have I done so far today? I woke up stupidly early, watched the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, spoke to my Dad and then my brother, Helen and the kids and met the fish which they just bought for their new aquarium (early Christmas present from their Aunty Gigi!). So basically the new life isn't that far removed from the old life, although it is 30 degrees outside so that is one major difference. That and the commentary over the F1.... Much better in English! I landed yesterday late afternoon along with hundreds of other Brits on their holidays. Its quite overwhelming when you walk out of an airport to shouts of "taxi" surrounding you. All the guys are holding signs and they come up to you and show them to you close up, as if you can't read whatever hotel name or other is being displayed. Taxi is a pretty international word I realised! Anyway, Hector and Sara turned up after about 10 minutes (Hector later admitted to me that he had been asleep with his phone on silent when I texted to say I had landed so I could have been waiting quite a bit longer!) and we came straight back to their place which is on a private gated development about 15 mins from the airport. We chilled out for a little bit, and because of the time difference I was able to speak to Mum over in Australia which was nice. Then we went out for dinner. I was wearing a long black maxi dress when I came out of my room and Sara said I was a bit dressed up for where they were going....that was me dressed down! So I changed back into jeans and a t shirt...guess I'm going to have to get used to dressing down. Maybe that pair of heels wasn't such a good idea after all! We went to a local Argentinian parillada, grill restaurant and had the most amazing steak with a lovely Malbec. Another thing I will have to get used to I suppose....good meat and wine...life is really hard! By 10.30 I was almost falling asleep at the table so we headed home and I was passed out by 11pm. It's now 10.30am. Sara and Hector have gone to a christening but will be back after lunch so I think we're going to head to the beach. Then I have been warned we will be having spicy Mexican food tonight. Apparently I have to get used to spicy food as well... What's spicy to our delicate European palette is mild for here, so I'm going to be initiated! And there it is...my first blog post. I'm not much of a writer so I'm not sure how often I will be doing this, but I will try to keep it updated. Can't promise it will be at all scintillating but I will do my best! Thanks for reading! Gina x
