The high seas — Rome, Italy

We had perfect weather for our stay in Rome and today joined the Seaborn Pride at the port in Civitavecchia about 1.5 hours drive from Rome. As we enter the port the wind is blowing with great gusto. The welcome was once again extremely inviting with the obligatory champagne and warm greetings from staff who we had sailed with on previous voyages on the Pride. After the assignation of our cabin we unpacked our belongings and waited for the safety drill, which was scheduled for 4.15, prior to sailing at 5.00pm. All was sounding good and going well until the captain made an important announcement as he welcomed us aboard. We were informed that we were heading into gale force winds of 30 to 40 notts, which will feel like 50 due to the speed of the ship! He expected seas of 3 metres and the crew were making the necessary arrangements for this journey. These conditions would prevail all night until our arrival in Naples the following morning. Sensible footwear was required, everything in our cabins was to be secured and sea sick medication was recommended for those who suffered motion sickness. I pondered the question of whether or not I should partake in a pill or two but considering I have not been sea sick for many years, and tend to take the odd risk here and there I would see how I went minus the meds! Stuey appears totally oblivious to all this and has advised me not to wake him up and tell him to stop snoring if I develop a relationship with the porcelain in the night! We were invited to dinner at the assistant cruise directors table and after about 1.5hours at sea, rocking and rolling I decided to ready myself for fine food and wine. Oh how wrong was I. As I lurched around the cabin so did my stomach and sense of well being. Stuart was sent to retrieve the required medication as I sat perched in the seat by the window looking at the horizon after trying several positions to ease the nausea. Two hours later as Stuart dined on coconut prawns and rack of veal I drowsily sipped on beef consommé in the cabin. So it appears I do still get seasick if the right conditions prevail and in future will heed the captain's warning early. It is early morning, the sea is calmer, we are approaching Naples and I am starving!
